Margaret Mary Serchen

Margaret Mary grew up near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A week at a Catholic camp in highschool was her first exposure to a thriving community. There, seeing young adults who were truly happy made her realize that she wanted that same joy. This eventually led to a more intentional practice of her faith and an exchange of her plans to attend a larger university for a tiny liberal arts college in Lander, Wyoming.

As a student at Wyoming Catholic, Margaret Mary experienced deep joy in her college community. Her friends studied, prayed, and backpacked together; they also challenged her to stop fearing hard things and to grow in virtue. She began leading trips for fellow students after her freshman year and began instructing for WCC and COR after her sophomore year. After graduating in 2024 with the John Paul II award for excellence in the integration of mind, body, and spirit, and instructing the WCC 21-day freshman expedition a second time, Margaret Mary accepted the invitation to serve as a full-time field instructor.

Besides spending time in the wilderness, Margaret Mary loves swimming in mountain lakes, singing, reading philosophy and poetry, conversing in English, Latin, or Chinese, and discovering how everything can be a prayer. Current projects include learning a new Bach partita on violin and perfecting the art of charcuterie (friends required, wilderness setting optional).
